How many tons of AC do you need for your room?
A simple rule of thumb to pick the right AC capacity.
Why capacity matters
An AC that is too small runs all day and never cools well. One that is too big switches on and off too often, wastes power and does not remove humidity properly. The right size cools evenly and runs efficiently.
A simple rule of thumb
For a normal room with a standard ceiling, these are the usual starting points:
- Up to about 110 sq ft: 1 ton
- About 110 to 160 sq ft: 1.5 ton
- About 160 to 250 sq ft: 2 ton
- Larger spaces: ducted, cassette or VRF systems planned for the room
When you need more capacity
Treat the numbers above as a starting point. Go up one size, or ask for a site visit, if any of these apply:
- The room is on the top floor, or the roof is exposed to sun
- The room has large windows facing the sun
- Many people use the room, or it holds heat-producing equipment
- It is a kitchen, a shop with bright lighting or a server room
- The ceiling is high

FAQ
Is a 1.5 ton AC enough for a bedroom?
For a typical bedroom of about 110 to 160 sq ft, usually yes. If the room is on the top floor or gets strong sun, consider 2 ton.
Can I buy a bigger AC to be safe?
Not necessarily. An oversized AC cycles on and off, wastes power and handles humidity poorly. Choose the right size.
